Those who remember the Jersey Shore nightlife in the 60's 70's and 80's are likely to get a little nostalgic upon entering Maynard's Cafe today. Once among a myriad of blue collar establishments in an area best known as the Barbary Coast, Maynard's is now a bit of a Margate novelty, surrounded by luxury condos and bay front restaurants that cater more to company CEO's than Fisherman and Construction Workers.
Opened by a professional boxer named Billy Maynard in 1914, the popular bar was bought by Al Troiano in 1966, and he ran it until he passed away in 2003.
Troiano - who carried the nickname "Mayor of Margate" bought 2 adjoining buildings, knocked them down and turned it into Big Al's Starlite Garden, an outdoor bar that's an extremely popular hangout for old and young alike during the summer months. Al's son Steve now owns Maynard's and along with Buddy McCabe his Manager/Partner they have kept the real Seashore flavor of a bar you'd typically enter wearing flip-flops and beachwear during the day, or jeans and t-shirts at night.
With a full menu of good, affordable food, live music, D J's, and warm summer nights, Maynard's is as good as it gets in the summertime.
If the outside is not your thing, you can watch your favorite sporting event on our 13 high-def TV's, shoot a game of pool, play some video games, or just hang out and meet new friends in air conditioned comfort. The bar menu features great sandwiches, wings and tenders, soups and appetizers, along with daily specials.
And if you're planning a get together, private party, reunion, anniversary party, or any special occasion, the knowledgeable staff will be sure to make it memorable.
